Born around 1300 into a noble Burgundian family, Geoffroi de Charny dedicated his entire life to the art of war and the ideals of knighthood. His service to the French King Philip VI and later King John II (John the Good) placed him at the heart of the Hundred Years' War, one of the longest and most devastating conflicts in medieval European history.

Charny gained fame through his involvement in numerous military campaigns, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and unmatched bravery. He fought against the English in Flanders, Brittany, and Gascony, and was captured at the Battle of Morlaix (1342). Despite his imprisonment, he was later released and continued his service to France.

By the 1350s, Charny was considered one of the most esteemed knights in Christendom. His devotion to the ideals of knighthood led him to write the famous Livre de Chivalrie (The Book of Chivalry), a foundational text that sought to define the virtues of an ideal knight. In 1352, King John II appointed Charny as the first bearer of the Oriflamme, the sacred battle standard of France, signifying the king’s favor and supreme trust in his courage. That same year, Charny helped found the Order of the Star, an elite chivalric order established to rival the English Order of the Garter. Members of the Order of the Star swore an oath to never retreat from battle—a vow that Charny himself would honor to the very end.

The Defense of Calais and Ultimate Sacrifice at Poitiers
One of Charny’s most famous exploits was his attempt to recapture Calais from the English in 1350, a city that had been lost after the French defeat at the Battle of Crécy (1346). Though his secret assault ultimately failed, his daring strategy cemented his reputation as a brilliant and determined commander.

His final and most heroic stand took place at the Battle of Poitiers (1356). As the French faced the Black Prince (Edward of Woodstock) and his English forces, Charny once again carried the Oriflamme into battle, a role entrusted only to the most loyal and fearless knights. Despite being vastly outmaneuvered, he refused to abandon his duty and fought to the death defending the banner, fulfilling his vow to never retreat. His death symbolized the ultimate sacrifice of a knight bound to honor above all else.

Legacy and the Mystery of the Shroud of Turin
Beyond his military and literary achievements, Geoffroi de Charny is also linked to one of the greatest religious mysteries in history—the Shroud of Turin. His family came into possession of this revered relic, which some believe to be the burial shroud of Christ.
